The European Parliament adopted its position on the Disability Rights Strategy post-2024, marking an important step forward for the second phase of the Strategy.
The position reflects several priorities raised by the disability movement, reinforcing important areas for advancing the rights of hard of hearing people:
• An EU Employment and Skills Guarantee to improve access to quality jobs and training for persons with disabilities.
• Stronger measures on freedom of movement, ensuring that accessibility and support do not stop at national borders.
• A reinforced AccessibleEU initiative, including the creation of a permanent EU accessibility agency to drive progress across sectors.
• EU-level rules governing the use of AI in employment, designed to prevent discrimination and ensure fairness in recruitment and workplace practices.
• Improved air passenger rights, addressing long-standing accessibility barriers in air travel.
• Full and equal political participation, strengthening democratic inclusion for persons with disabilities.
This is an encouraging development that reflects meaningful engagement with disability organisations and their calls for more ambitious EU action. With the Parliament’s position now established, attention turns to the next steps at the EU level as institutions shape the final contours of the post-2024 Disability Rights Strategy.
We look forward to continued progress and stronger commitments that deliver improvements in accessibility, equality, and participation for all.
