Recent developments in international standardisation highlight important progress in the field of assistive listening technologies.

Two upcoming standards from the International Electrotechnical Commission are expected to play a key role in improving the quality, interoperability, and accessibility of assistive listening systems globally.

IEC 63087 – Assistive Listening Devices and Systems

The upcoming IEC 63087 standard provides a comprehensive, technology-neutral framework for assistive listening systems used in active assisted living environments.

Expected to be published in 2026, the standard includes:

  • A classification of different assistive listening systems (large and small scale)

  • Guidance for system design and implementation

  • Assessment and reporting tools for installed systems

  • Requirements for equipment selection, operation, and maintenance

By taking a technology-neutral approach, the standard is designed to remain relevant as new technologies emerge, ensuring long-term applicability.

IEC 60118-17 – Wireless Audio Broadcasting for Hearing Aids

A second standard under development, IEC 60118-17, focuses on wireless audio transmission systems for hearing aids operating in the 2.4 GHz band.

This standard, closely linked to emerging technologies such as Auracast, will:

  • Enable direct audio streaming to hearing aids and similar devices

  • Support global interoperability using license-free frequency bands

  • Define requirements for both transmitters and receivers, as well as installation and performance

The standard is currently under development and is expected to be published around 2027.

Why this matters

These standards represent an important step towards more consistent, reliable, and accessible assistive listening solutions across different environments, including public spaces, workplaces, and services.

For the hard of hearing community, this has the potential to significantly improve access to communication, participation, and inclusion.

Further information on the development of IEC standards is available on the International Electrotechnical Commission website, particularly under the “Standards Development” section.
