On 8 June 2026, EFHOH marked World Assistive Technology Day with its webinar “From Hearing Devices to Inclusive Environments.”
The webinar brought together experts in accessibility, policy, assistive technology, and disability advocacy to explore how assistive technology can support communication, participation, and independence for hard of hearing people.
A key message emerged throughout the discussion: hearing accessibility depends on much more than hearing devices alone. While hearing aids and cochlear implants are important, meaningful accessibility also requires inclusive environments, assistive listening systems, communication technologies, standards, and effective implementation.
Participants discussed both established and emerging solutions, including hearing loops, Auracast, Real-Time Text (RTT), and accessible emergency communications. The conversation also highlighted the importance of ensuring that innovation remains accessible, affordable, and available to all.
The webinar further explored how legislation and policy, including the European Accessibility Act, can help turn accessibility commitments into practical improvements in everyday life.
As attention to assistive technology continues to grow across Europe and globally, the discussion reinforced the need to keep the experiences of hard of hearing people at the centre of accessibility, policy discussions and innovation efforts.
EFHOH would like to thank all speakers and participants who joined us for this engaging discussion. Special thanks to Lidia Best (EFHOH), Karen Reyes (ATscale), Jonathan Elebjörk Wahlström (Unga Hörselskadade), Ella Revill (Ampetronic), and Alf Lindberg (HRF) for sharing their expertise and perspectives.
